The programme raises awareness of space-enabled solutions, connecting end-user organisations with space suppliers and provides funding and expert support to de-risk innovation and accelerate commercial adoption. Aligned with the UK Space Strategy’s focus on commercialisation and growth, USB stimulates demand for space-enabled services by supporting end-user led projects with a credible route to adoption. Through this approach the programme aims to demonstrate tangible business value, supports the growth of UK space capabilities and reduces barriers to the uptake of space-enabled solutions across UK industry. Environmental intelligence and emissions monitoring have been identified as USB priority areas through ongoing engagement with businesses and stakeholders that required trusted environmental data to support decision-making, risk management, sustainability reporting and regulatory compliance. Growing demand for climate, nature and environmental monitoring capabilities presents a significant opportunity for UK organisations to adopt innovative space-enabled services that improve operational outcomes while supporting the growth of the UK space sector. Environmental intelligence is defined as the combination of terrestrial and satellite-derived monitoring data, alongside enabling technologies such as AI, to provide actionable insights to businesses on the physical environment they are operating within. This type of insights is becoming increasingly important across both public and private sectors, driven by climate adaptation requirements, nature recovery commitments, environmental regulation, sustainability reporting obligations and growing demand for trusted environmental intelligence. This growing demand presents an opportunity to improve environmental outcomes and stimulate new customer markets for innovative UK space-enabled products and services. Space-enabled technologies are uniquely placed to support environmental intelligence and emissions monitoring, providing consistent repeatable and large scale observations that would often be costly, impractical or challenging to obtain through terrestrial approaches alone. The UK space sector generates over £18 billion in annual income and supports more than 50,000 jobs across the UK. Supporting greater adoption of these capabilities by end-user businesses represents an opportunity to both address environmental challenges and accelerate growth across the UK space economy. Following a successful pilot and two previous funding rounds, the USB programme is continuing to support the commercialisation and adoption of space solutions through the USB Environmental Intelligence and Emissions Grant Call. This competition adopts a challenge-led approach, placing end-user businesses at the centre of project design and delivery. By supporting near market solutions to defined environmental intelligence and emissions challenges, it aims to accelerate adoption of space-enabled technologies and deliver measurable operational, commercial and environmental benefits. The UK Space Agency invites proposals from UK end-user businesses, leading a consortium with a UK space supplier and any relevant integrators playing a key role in combining capabilities , to deliver innovative pilot projects addressing one of the environmental intelligence and emissions challenge areas outlined below. Examples of relevant end-user sectors include financial services, insurance, asset management, energy, utilities, infrastructure, agriculture, land management and environmental services Challenge Area 1: Environmental Intelligence for Climate, Nature and Natural Capital Challenge Area 2: Environmental Intelligence for Emissions Monitoring and Verification
